Diversity & Inclusion

In the wake of the recent social justice movement that has cascaded across the United States and the globe, companies are thinking more than ever about how they may be better corporate citizens. Never has it been more important than now to be part of the solution, not the problem. The objective being to produce higher quality standards of living and quality of life for surrounding communities and still maintain profitability for stakeholders. Consequently, serious consideration is being given to the cultural landscape and how to exercise better social responsibility through workplace inclusivity.

Just recently a CEO of a Fortune 100 company found himself coming under fire after saying that  “there is a very limited pool of Black talent to recruit from” in corporate America suggesting it is too difficult to find qualified Black executives in his given industry.  He later apologized but the damage had been done. Ultimately, other companies and individuals alike derided this viewpoint as wrongheaded and ill-conceived and rightly so.

More forwardthinking companies have taken the approach of ramping up in these two key areas:

(1) Diversity & Inclusion hiring initiatives

(2) Tier-1 supplier diversity programs

BENEFITS OF DIVERSITY & INCLUSION IN THE WORKPLACE

Mutual Respect Among Coworkers

Diversity in the workplace is instrumental in fostering a sense of mutual respect among employees.  When coworkers are teamed with others who represent different cultures, sexual orientations, disabilities, and even varied work styles, enhanced synergy in the workplace becomes the norm.

Economic Inclusion and Empowerment of Historically Marginalized Communities

It’s no secret that broad swaths of the population have been economically disadvantaged due to a lack of inclusion in opportunities to grow wealth. Sometimes resulting from feelings of discomfort and other times outright animus toward other races and cultures, many in positions of leadership have elected to hire strictly in their own images.  This has had adverse consequences in terms of circulating money within these marginalized local communities and also homogeneous workforces in ever-shifting demographic markets have put companies at a decided disadvantage.

Enhanced Business Reputation

Diversity within the workplace is essential because invariably it strengthens the reputation of the company, leading to increased profitability and greater opportunities for employees. Business reputations flourish when organizations consistently demonstrate a commitment to inclusion through their mission-critical diversity recruitment initiatives.

Companies with a reputation for ethics, fair hiring practices, and appreciation for diverse talent are better positioned to attract and retain a broader pool of qualified applicants. Loyalty from customers who elect only to do business with companies that are socially responsible is another quantifiable advantage in an approach that emphasizes building a diverse workforce.

Diversity and Business Performance

There has been significant research concluding that diversity is responsible for numerous advantages to an organization such as increased productivity and profitability as well as creativity, stronger governance, and enhanced problem-solving.  Diverse sets of employees provide diverse sets of ideas, philosophies, and experiences that help create organizations that are more nimble, resilient, forward-thinking, and generally more effective and positioned to outperform organizations that do not emphasize a commitment to investing in diversity.

A study by the Boston Consulting Group concluded that companies with greater diversity within their leadership have 19% higher revenues due to innovation.  This finding is particularly significant for tech companies, early-stage startups, and industries where innovation is key to growth. The overall takeaway is that diversity isn’t simply the icing on the cake, it’s in fact the cake. It’s absolutely integral in successfully increasing productivity, decreasing costs, and increasing revenue.

BENEFITS OF SUPPLIER DIVERSITY

Supplier diversity is signified by proactive business programs that encourage the process of sourcing supplies and services from minority-owned, women-owned, veteran-owned, LGBT-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned, historically underutilized businesses, and SBA-defined small business vendors.

Supplier diversity is widely regarded as a best practice that should be embraced within every organization.  It is a mechanism that not only enriches the community around you, but it also positions organizations at a distinct competitive advantage from a business perspective.

In a report titled “ROI-related Supplier Diversity”, the Hackett Group found companies who participate in a long-term supplier diversity program can generate a 133% greater ROI than those firms who look no further than the suppliers they traditionally rely upon.  The report claims supplier diversity programs also drive an additional $3.6 million to an organization’s bottom line for every $1 million spent in procurement operating costs.

Beyond ROI, the Hackett Group concluded that procurement organizations who work with a diverse supplier base also had lower overall operating costs and spent 20% less on their buying operations.  This success all occurred while employing half the number of people in their procurement department.

Here are five reasons why companies should be taking advantage of procurement’s best-kept secret:

  • Promotes innovation through the introduction of new products, services, and solutions

  • Provides multiple channels from which to procure goods and services

  • Drives competition (on price and service levels) between the company’s existing and potential vendors

  • Allows a company to take advantage of new opportunities for business expansion with the emergence of new consumer needs based upon shifting demographic realities

  • Displays your company’s interest in and commitment to social responsibility through economic growth of your entire community including ones

If your organization recognizes the inherent value in both employee and supplier diversity, Holliday Partners Inc. is ready and able to partner with you.  As a Black and Latino owned, operated, and staffed executive search firm, we are uniquely positioned to fill the gap in these two incredibly vital areas.
